Pitești has the reputation of a transit city — you catch the A1 on your way to the mountain. It’s an injustice. The “City of Tulips” is green and airy, with a forest park in the middle (Trivale), a pleasant pedestrian and a spring that explodes in colours at the Lalelel Symposium.
The centre is a long walk: the Victory Walk, the Cathedral, the terraces, the County Museum. And for those who want to understand the difficult history of Romania, the Pitești Prison Memorial is one of the most disturbing places of memory in the country.
But the real strength of Piteștiu is what you have in the north, on the valley of Argeș. At an hour you have the Monastery Court of Argeș, the Vidraru dam and – for those who are looking for the authentic legend – the Fortress Poenari, the real fortress of Vlad Țepeș, with its 1,500 steps.
